Heartland Crossing Retention Ponds

Recently we have experienced substantial amounts of dead fish in one of our retention ponds in the Heartland Crossing Community. I.D.E.M. explained that the dead fish are caused by the depth of the water and the climate changes with the hot temperatures that we have had which is called pond turnover. The Marion County Health Department also came out and didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary with the pond and stated it was the turnover as well. If you notice a pond around your home experiencing pond turnover please contact the office at 856-3423

No Lawn Watering through the end of the week

Please read the following. This is a will affect all Indianapolis Water and Tri-County Conservancy District residents.

Urgent Request: Please refrain from all lawn watering through the end of the week

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indianapolis Department of Waterworks (DOW) is asking customers to immediately refrain from all lawn watering through the end of this coming weekend, Sunday, July 24, in the wake of this week’s high heat and lack of rain.

Water consumption across central Indiana has increased steadily since last week; Indianapolis Water, the region’s largest drinking water utility, pumped 215 million gallons of water yesterday, compared with an average of 140 MGD. Consumption is on track to top 220+ million gallons today

“We need our customers to immediately curtail lawn-watering activities,” said Matthew Klein, executive director of the Indianapolis Department of Waterworks, owner of Indianapolis Water. “Because of the tremendous volume of water being used for irrigation purposes, our system is unable to recover following the peaks of usage and we’re not able to fill our tanks and our reserves as quickly as we need to in order to meet demand.”

As a result, some Indianapolis Water customers MAY notice low water pressure due to excessive water consumption and the associated stresses on the water system.

“With no relief from the summer heat in sight and a continuing lack of rainfall, we are asking for Indianapolis Water customers to cease lawn-watering activities until at least the end of the week,” Klein added. “Continuing to run our systems at this level creates a tremendous amount of stress on the underground assets critical to the delivery of clean, fresh drinking water. Without an immediate end to lawn watering, the system could be at risk for water main breaks, failures, water outages and pressure drops.”

The utility will reevaluate the request to cease all lawn watering this weekend, and may extend the request into next week if the hot, dry weather pattern continues.

In addition, customers also are asked to voluntarily practice the following wise water use guidelines at all times:

Repair or replace leaking water fixtures;
Run water appliances, such as clothes washers and dishwashers, when they are full;
Turn off the water while brushing teeth or shaving;
Do not over water lawns or landscaping; (http://www.agry.purdue.edu/turf/)
Use a higher lawnmower setting to provide natural ground shade and promote the soil’s water retention;
Wash cars with a bucket of soapy water and use a nozzle to stop the flow of water from the hose between rinsing;
Eliminate wasteful sprinkling of impervious surfaces, such as streets and sidewalks;
Cover swimming pools to reduce evaporation; and
Retrofit low-performance fixtures with high-performance WaterSense-labeled fixtures.

The Department of Waterworks owns and manages Indianapolis Water, which serves nearly one million people in central Indiana, and contracts the system’s operation to Veolia Water Indianapolis.

Crime Stoppers Community Shred-it Day

Crime Stoppers Community Shred-it Day
Saturday April 23rd

Crime Stoppers, Shred-it, and Goodwill partner to help you protect your identity, dispose of unused prescription medications, and recycle electronics.
Up to ten million people become victims of identity theft each year according to the Federal Trade Commission. Identity theft occurs when someone uses your name, social security number, credit card account or other personal information to commit a crime. In an effort to help you take the first steps toward protecting your identity, Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana is again partnering with Shred-it to hold a Community Shred Day on Saturday, April 23, 2011.

The first step in deterring identity thieves is to protect your personal information. Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana realizes how important it is to properly dispose of those personal and business records you no longer need and how time consuming that process may be. Many people and small businesses have stored documents for years because they do not have the time or resources to properly dispose of them. On April 23, 2011 for a tax deductible donation of $5 per banker box, you can watch as your documents are instantly destroyed by one of the giant Shred-high speed cross cutting machines. This is the same process many of the largest businesses in Indiana use everyday to safely dispose of their important records. All proceeds will be donated to the Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana reward fund which is used to solve serious felony crimes throughout the Central Indiana community.

Crime Stoppers Pharma Trash Disposal
The National Household Survey on Drug Abuse revealed that millions of teenagers and young adults abuse prescription medications. Young people typically obtain prescription medications from peers, friends or family members because they are easily accessible and inexpensive. The use of prescription medications without a valid prescription is illegal and dangerous. Local law enforcement will be on site to collect the prescription medications you no longer need and dispose of them in a manner that is environmentally safe. According to the American Board of Family Medicine, 54% of consumers dispose their medications through the trash and 35% flush them down the toilet where they may contaminate our waterways.

Goodwill Industries Electronic Collection
Goodwill Industries will be onsite so donors can drop off computers, accessories, cell phones, and electronics. Reconnect, a partnership between Goodwill Industries and Dell, offers a free computer recycling for residential customers to donate any brand of used computers and computer accessories. Computers and accessories donated to Goodwill do not need to be in working order, but customers are responsible for removing all personal information before the donation occurs. Goodwill also accepts: iPods/MP3 players, mobile phones, pagers, and digital voice recorders for recycling. These donations do not have to work. Televisions, TV recording/viewing devices (DVR, VHS, DVD, etc.), video game consoles and accessories, video equipment, and digital photo frames are accepted in working order for resale in Goodwill stores.

You can take advantage of this opportunity to begin protecting your identity by bringing your old documents to one of following of the Community Shred Day events on April 23, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
